Culture

Culture is cool. We have open areas for collaborating, and communication is easy. Some of the things we think are special about Summit include:

Activities

Summit Engineering is a close network of committed professionals. We work hard. We have fun. We have high expectations of ourselves and one another, and help each other to achieve those expectations. We enjoy our work and we like our clients. We dress casually. We treat each other with respect. We understand people have full lives. We think this is an awesome place to work, and we think you will too. Summit Engineering has received the Best Places to Work Award 13 times! Here are just a few reasons you might like to work at Summit Engineering:

  • We work on a 9/80 schedule.  That means we work 9-hour days (instead of 8), and our office is closed every other Friday. It’s great for scheduling appointments, going away for long weekends, or just getting an early start to the weekend.
  • We have monthly Wine Downs where we all gather for snacks and beverages. Management gives a quick update, and then one employee makes a mini presentation on something they are passionate about. It’s a great way to get to know each other on a more personal level.
  • Breakfast is served on the last day of the week, every week. The Kitchen is ALWAYS stocked with cereal, yogurt, bread, PB, and other items.  Fruit, chocolate, nuts, granola bars, etc. are also available.
  • Our FUN committee plans great activities throughout the year like kayaking, camping, and bowling, as well as in-house events such as Office Olympics, Engineering Week, Oktoberfest, and a Volleyball Competition.
  • “The Slide Rules” is the name of our softball team.  We compete against other engineering firms and wineries in the area. It’s great fun.
  • Employees often get together after work for off-hours socializing and non-company events like a Tahoe ski trip, Bike to Work Day, and Mountain Biking.
  • Every summer/fall we have a big family picnic, and each winter we sponsor an amazing Holiday Party for employees and their spouse or guest. Both events are top notch.
  • The Airport Health Club (ranked #1 in Santa Rosa) is a few blocks from the office.  Summit pays the one-time membership fee for employees, and then typically rebates back a portion of what employees paid in monthly dues.
  • TO/PTO is accrued and equates to 120 hours (3 weeks) the first year and increases to 152 hours (close to 4 weeks) the 2nd year.  It periodically increases again after that.
  • We have 8 ½ paid holidays per year.  If an “off” Friday and a holiday are on the same day, we move that “off” day so you don’t lose the time off!
  • Giving back to the community is important to Summit. We offer a Matching Donation program to help employees leverage their contributions to community or charity endeavors.
  • Our engineers work on multiple projects at a time, so are continually exposed to the various engineering disciplines, different mentors, and a diverse assortment of challenges.
  • We offer 4 different health care plans, and Summit pays 100% of the employee’s cost for their medical, dental, vision and life insurance plans.  Summit also contributes towards dependents’ medical.
  • We know that great employees know other great potential employees, so have a referral bonus program in place to encourage that.
  • We offer a Vanguard 401K plan to employees after they have been here for three months. Summit contributes a flat 3% of an employee’s salary into their account on a quarterly basis.
  • Each employee has a Professional Development Plan. Summit encourages and supports ongoing professional development by providing employees with appropriate seminars, workshops, and other training opportunities. We assist employees in accruing the experience, skills, and knowledge to obtain their California PE or SE license.

Giving Back

Summit believes in giving back:

  • Giving back to the local community in various ways is important to Summit. Last year, we volunteered at the local Redwood Empire Food Bank where we sorted carrots and apples for distribution.
  • Our employees particiated in a winter clothing and supplies drive to suppor the Sonoma County Task Force for the Homeless "One Warm Coat" project.
  • We provided financial assistance to help communities in Lake County rebuild after the devastating forest fires.
  • Summit sponsored the Mike Hauser Algebra Academy which provides middle school students with the opportunity to visit STEM related employers and learn the possibilities of future careers.
  • Summit is also a corporate sponsor of the local Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Sonoma County Professional chapter.  A number of EWB-SCP presidents have been Summit employees, and several of our employees have traveled to the Peruvian Amazon to install rainwater catchment systems for villages that did not have access to clean water.

Professional Development

  • Summit encourages and supports ongoing professional development by providing employees with appropriate seminars, workshops, and other training opportunities.
  • Each and every employee has a professional development plan. Employees collaborate with their manager to define their professional development goals for the year.
  • We assist employees in accruing the experience, skills, and knowledge to obtain their California PE or SE license, and provide a financial assistance to those in the process.
  • Our engineers work on multiple projects at a time, so are continually exposed to the various engineering disciplines, different mentors, and a diverse assortment of challenges.
  • We encourage employees to actively participate in profesesional organizations.
