Human Resources Manager/Generalist
This is an opportunity to have hands-on responsibility for all areas of the human resources activities for the firm. Summit Engineering is a 41-employee design engineering firm in Santa Rosa, with clients in the winery, high-end residential, and resort markets. You will be handling recruiting, new hire orientation, benefits administration, LOAs, retention, HR legal and safety compliance, staff performance review process and training, employee relations, the termination process, and workers comp administration. The Human Resources Manager also provides the management team with recommendations on fair compensation, compliance, and initiatives to retain qualified staff. The work is highly precise in nature and requires strong attention to detail, although you must also be people-focused and conscientious. We’re looking for someone who wants to grow.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Recruiting/New Hire Process
- Coordinates all aspects of recruiting including strategic initiatives related to the recruitment and retention of top candidates in the industry, and delivering metrics to the management team.
- Conducts and/or coordinates new hire orientations and makes continual improvements to the new hire onboarding process based on feedback and company changes.
Benefits
- Administers and maintains employee benefits program.
- Coordinates annual open enrollment. Provides management with plan updates and suggests improvements to plans based on demographic trends, as necessary.
- Manages Leaves of Absence.
Retention
- Identifies areas of opportunity that help increase employee engagement and minimize employee turnover. Works with management team to develop and implement strategies to address these opportunities.
Compliance
- Keeps management informed of relevant issues including State and Federal employment laws and compliance issues.
- Maintains personnel files in compliance with guidelines and records retentions regulations. Keeps employee paperwork organized and functional.
- Develops and revises company guidelines, policies, and the employee handbook in accordance with firm objectives and federal and state legal requirements. Communicates new policies and changes to policies to employees.
- Works with Division Managers and Principals to maintain current job descriptions.
- Maintains membership with HR associations/publications to stay current on all relevant laws. Makes recommendations to management team related to labor law practices and changes.
Staff Performance Process and Training
- Develops and administers performance appraisal process with management team.
- Maintains staff training records.
- Registers staff for training when applicable; provides sources for training upon request.
- Provides management and staff with appropriate HR related training (e.g., regarding interviewing, HR issues, personal and career development, labor law compliance, Workers’ Compensation issues, professional behavior expectations, ergonomics, etc.)
Employee Relations and the Terminations Process
- Works with management to address and minimize employee relations issues.
- Conducts workplace investigations related to harassment, discrimination, or any other violation reported to Human Resources that warrants such investigation.
- Responsible for employee termination process and paperwork, when appropriate conducts exit interviews, reports findings to management team, and implements changes to employee retention strategies.
Safety and Workers’ Compensation
- Schedules and tracks staff safety training.
- Manages Workers’ Compensation claims.
Other
- Provides backup for payroll processing.
- Analyzes data, prepares reports, and makes recommendations on a variety of human resources issues.
- Supports firm’s strategic initiatives.
- Attends Summit Management Team meetings as needed.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum five years of experience in Human Resources
- Bachelor’s degree and/or PHR or equivalent combination of education and experience
- High level of discretion and business ethics
- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Familiarity with State and Federal employment laws
- Ability to build and maintain trust with staff and managers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to analyze data and create spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel

Salary: $90,000 to $125,000

Civil Engineers

We are always looking for talented engineers who possess a PE or EIT. One our upcoming needs will be for an additional civil engineering staff engineer. We are looking for someone who is interested in sustainable site design, and enjoys design work in the areas of grading, drainage, and utility design. As a Civil Staff Engineer at Summit, you are responsible for specific engineering and design tasks as part of a project team in which you will utilize your education, training and experience to solve engineering problems, perform calculations, and transform concept designs into construction drawings and technical specifications. Technical areas of design work include sustainable site design, stormwater mitigation measures, grading, utility layout, pavement design, roadway geometry as well as hydraulic, hydrologic and earthwork calculations.
Qualifications/Skills:
- B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering.
- California E.I.T. certification (or in the process of obtaining) and the ability to pursue and obtain a California Professional Engineering license (P.E.)
- Internships, relevant work experience and advanced degrees are a plus.
- Experience using AutoCAD and Civil 3D. The candidate should be familiar with the capabilities and operations of Civil 3D for building surfaces, performing grading, laying out utilities, building corridors and cutting profiles and sections.
- Experience in Hydraulics and Hydrology, and familiarity with Low Impact Development (LID) measures.
- Ability to problem solve, complete assigned tasks efficiently and meet project deadlines.

Electrical Engineers
Summit Engineering, Inc. is looking for talented electrical and lighting design engineers. Various levels of experience will be considered. We are an award winning multi-disciplined design engineering firm located in the heart of beautiful Sonoma County (Santa Rosa, CA). Summit’s Electrical/Lighting division provides consulting engineering services for winery, brewery, high end residential, resort, commercial office, and other clients.
- Collaborate with architects and clients on the design of the lighting and power distribution aspects of building projects such as wineries, commercial, health care, and high end residential.
- Create design and specifications of the following (but not limited to) systems: power distribution, emergency power systems, alternate power energy systems (PV, battery storage), lighting design, lighting controls, and low voltage signal systems (telecom/AV/security systems/fire alarm).
- Coordination with power and telecom utility companies.
- Prepare electrical construction documents and technical specifications.
- Perform construction phase assistance including site visits and field reports. Respond to requests for information (RFI’s) and review equipment submittals and shop drawings.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Experienced in the design of electrical and lighting systems in the building types and market sectors similar to those we serve.
- Understanding of design components such as electrical distribution diagrams, short circuit, electrical room layouts, voltage drop calculates, lighting fixture design/layout, fixture schedules, control diagrams, and local and state building energy codes.
- Proficiency with lighting design software programs (AGI, Visual or similar), AutoCAD and REVIT, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Knowledge of building and electrical codes including California Title 24 Energy Standards.
- Ability to work on multiple projects at any given time, train and mentor staff, and act as a firm representative to our clients.
- B.S. Degree in Architectural or Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power distribution, lighting design and electrical building systems.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or FE with ability to pursue PE.

Planner
Our Planning and Permitting Division supports a diverse range of projects including: winery, brewery, high end residential, commercial, and other projects throughout California and the northwest. As a multidisciplinary firm, projects are generated from a variety of disciplines and the Planning team supports all divisions. We are committed to client service and excellence in all that we do. The Planner is an integral member of the project team responsible for assisting Project Managers and other staff with preparation, submittal and facilitation functions of various permits.
• Prepare application packages for ministerial and discretionary permits such as use permits and building permits.
• Prepare project descriptions, solicit proposals, collect reports and studies in support of applications.
• Work with various governmental agencies to facilitate prompt plan review and approval from reviewing agency.
• Maintain a submittal log, create transmittals, facilitate payment of permit fees and response to plan check comments.
Typical responsibilities include:
• Prepare and maintain the permitting schedule as directed by the Project Manager; inform team of upcoming milestones and scheduled deadlines to facilitate project progress.
• Work with various governmental agencies to identify permitting procedures, requirements, and timelines and communicate applicable standards and procedures to the internal and/or external team.
• Assist internal and/or external team members with interpretation of applicable codes, regulations, and standards as directed by the Division Manager.
• Provide technical advice on planning, zoning and land use matters as directed by the Division Manager.
Salary: $70,000 to $90,000
Desired Requirements:
• Exhibits an understanding of the California Environmental Quality Act as it relates to discretionary permits.
• Understands code requirements and has the ability to interpret their applicability.
• Basic understanding of project design workflow, Summit and other consultants’ roles on typical projects, and government agencies’ roles on projects.
• Ability to read and understand mapping and facility construction drawings to identify information relevant to the project.
• Exhibits strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills, demonstrates follow through on assigned tasks and meets project deadlines.
• Two to five years’ experience, including internships.
• Degree in planning and/or related field preferred.
Must also have a valid driver’s license, and be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.

Structural Engineering Project Engineer
As a Project Engineer in our Structural Division, you will be responsible for executing engineering and design tasks with a high degree of independence, collaborating with staff engineers as needed to complete their work. Engineers in this position develop construction documents, calculations, specifications, and technical engineering reports.
The job requires an emphasis in low rise, high complexity buildings that involve common construction material such as steel, concrete, wood, and masonry, and uncommon materials such as aluminum, and stainless steel. Design and drafting using AutoCAD and Revit will be a responsibility of this position.
The selected applicant will gain experience in permitting within the North Coast and beyond. They will also have opportunities to take on increasing responsibility and independence commensurate with their abilities and initiative.
Salary: $95,000 to $135,000 depending on experience.
Qualifications/Skills:
- B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural.
- CA Professional Engineering license (P.E.).
- 3 to 5 years of experience showing successively increasing responsibility.
- Experience in the design of wood-framed, concrete and steel-framed structures, including commercial and high-end residential projects.
- Experience using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
- Ability to work on several projects concurrently.
- Ability to focus on the details of a project while understanding the big picture from the project team perspective.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a project team, with demonstrated time management skills.

Structural Engineering Staff Engineer
Work in a collaborative, fast paced environment, helping design wineries, breweries, high end residential and other interesting projects. This position involves performing engineering calculations and design using technical skills, experience, and engineering judgment to transform concept designs into Construction Drawings and Technical Specifications. You will prepare plans and details in AutoCAD or Revit, and work collaboratively on multiple projects with your colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Salary: $75,000 to $90,000
Qualifications/Skills:
- Beginning to intermediate skill with REVIT software.
- B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in Structural and E.I.T. Certification highly preferred.
- Experience with wood design desired.
- Ability and drive to pursue and obtain a California P.E. license.
- Competency in working with at least one other structural software program such as RAM, STAAD, ETAB, or RISA.
- Ability to prepare AutoCAD structural plans and details with minimal supervision.
- Experience on a construction site, either through internship or work experience, highly preferred.
- One to three years of experience in a similar role highly preferred.
- Ability to resolve issues and complete work per deadlines efficiently.
- Ability to work well on a project team.

Water/Wastewater Engineers

Summer Internship Program for Civil, Structural, Water/Wastewater, and Electrical Engineers, as well as Planning Majors
Summit invests in our future talent through a dedicated, paid summer internship program. The internship program is geared for college level students in the fields of Civil, Structural, Water/Wastewater, and Electrical Engineering, as well as Planning and Permitting. Our 9-week internship program includes a Monday through Thursday schedule with curriculum and activities curated by practicing engineers. You will also have the opportunity to learn about other disciplines and how they relate to each other on a project-level basis.
