As a Civil Staff Engineer at Summit, you are responsible for engineering and design tasks while working on a project team. The Staff Engineer solves engineering problems and prepares engineering documents. The Staff Engineer is responsible for planning and conducting work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. This role prepares or modifies drawings, specifications, calculations, and other engineering work in compliance with applicable codes and accepted engineering practices of Summit Engineering.

Salary Range: $80,000 to $95,000 annually

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs limited engineering calculations and design using technical skills and engineering judgment to transform concept designs into Construction Documents.
  • At the direction of other engineers, prepares plans and engineering documents using AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Revit or other software.
  • Reviews sketches and/or detailed layout information from others for incorporation into the Construction Drawings and Technical Specifications.
  • Performs engineering analysis using hand calculations; backchecks work with computer software to become familiar with software capabilities.
  • Prepares engineering reports and other documentation. Communicates clearly with the internal project team, as well as clients, contractors, and outside consultants as necessary.
  • Provides input to project team regarding project status on a regular basis.
  • Takes responsibility for accuracy and completion of assigned tasks. Back checks work, communicates questions, and resolves discrepancies.
  • Works on multiple tasks concurrently. Monitors progress and communicates status to Project Manager or supervisor.
  • Utilized Summit technical standards for the creation of work products.
  • Attends offsite project meetings and construction site visits.
  • Actively participates in learning and development opportunities and engages in training related to the position.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent education and experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification (or in the process of obtaining).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and is capable of producing drawings in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.  The candidate should be familiar with the capabilities and operations of Civil 3D for building surfaces, performing grading, laying out utilities, building corridors and cutting profiles and sections.
  • Experience in Hydraulics and Hydrology, and familiarity with Low Impact Development (LID) measures.
  • Exhibits strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with the use of computers including spreadsheets, word processing, and engineering software and ability to prepare electronic design calculation documents.
  • Ability to problem solve, complete assigned tasks efficiently, and meet project deadlines.

Electrical Project Engineer

As an Electrical Project Engineer at Summit, you are responsible for non-routine or complex tasks and assignments while working on project teams in which education, training, and experience are used to solve engineering problems and develop engineering designs. The Project Engineer works with a Project Manager to accomplish the tasks associated with the project and works independently to plan, execute, and monitor engineering tasks necessary to complete a project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides fee and time estimates for work product for use in proposal preparation.
  • Communicates project status to Project Manager or Sr. Project Engineer and project team. Monitors scope of services and reports to Project Manager when work activity is beyond defined work scope.
  • At the direction of Project Managers, prepares engineering analysis, design, and calculations for select portions of a project.
  • Prepares project drawings, calculations, and specifications requiring minimal Quality Management (QM) comments.
  • Familiar with most aspects of construction document preparation and capable of independently making design decisions or preparing proposed solutions for review and discussion with Project Managers.
  • Manages assigned tasks or projects to meet project budget requirements for the projects of the portions assigned.
  • Mentors Staff Engineers and/or other staff.
  • Keeps up with latest code and standard development by attending appropriate seminars or other learning opportunities.
  • Performs construction assistance related tasks including responding to RFI (Request for Information), visiting job site, reviewing submittals, and coordinating with design team for revisions.
  • Responsible for coordinating with the client or consultant team to collect necessary design and coordination information for the completion of in scope engineering design and documents.
  • Able to act as a technical lead on multi-divisional tasks.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural or Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in lighting design and /or power distribution and electrical building systems
  • California Professional Engineer (P.E.) is desired or in the process of obtaining.
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently.
  • Exhibits strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge, and is capable of producing drawings in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Civil 3D, or Revit.
  • Proficient with the use of spreadsheets, word processing, and engineering software and ability to prepare electronic design calculation documents.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively on a project team.
  • Ability to plan one’s own time and manage the time of others, as needed. Demonstrates good time management skills.

Electrical Project Manager

Summit Engineering, Inc. is seeking a professionally licensed electrical engineer with proven project management and leadership skills to join our Electrical/Lighting Division. This experienced person will utilize their professional background to provide project management and design engineering on winery, custom residential, restaurants, apartment buildings and other commercial building type projects.

As an Electrical Project Manager at Summit, you will serve as the firm’s direct contact with the client and will be responsible for developing and maintaining positive relationships with clients. You will be responsible for design team leadership, internal project organization, preparing project proposals, design engineering, scheduling and budgeting, as well as business development and generating new work for the firm. The job requires getting things done quickly, handling a variety of activities, and effectively delegating to others. Qualifications/Skills:

  • Registered Professional Electrical Engineer.

Planner II

Our Planning and Permitting Division supports a diverse range of projects including: winery, brewery, high end residential, commercial, and other projects throughout California and the northwest. As a multidisciplinary firm, projects are generated from a variety of disciplines and the Planning team supports all divisions. We are committed to client service and excellence in all that we do. The Planner II is an integral member of the project team responsible for assisting Project Managers, clients, and other team members with preparation, submittal, and facilitation functions of various permits. The focus of this position is working with and through others, building and maintaining relationships, and working closely and accurately within established guidelines. There is a need for an effective communicator, someone who is able to stimulate and motivate others while being aware of and responsive to their needs and concerns. There will be many different people to meet and work with. Detail work is a major focus of the job, and those details need to be handled quickly, correctly, and efficiently. Planner II is expected to have strong knowledge in current zoning regulations, entitlement process, and ministerial permitting process in jurisdictions where Summit provides most services, such as Sonoma County, Napa County, and Lake County. Planner II should have familiarity with relevant agency staff and organizational structure in jurisdictions as directed by the supervisor.

Salary Range: $85,000 to $100,000 annually

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain the permitting schedule as directed by the Project Manager; inform team of upcoming milestones and scheduled deadlines to facilitate project progress.
  • Work with various governmental agencies to identify permitting procedures, requirements, and timelines. Communicate applicable standards and procedures to the internal and/or external team.
  • Prepare project statements with little to no review comments, solicit proposals from consultants, review & comment on reports and studies for discretionary applications.
  • Prepare application packages for ministerial permits such as building permits. Work to be done independently with limited review and input.
  • Maintain a submittal log, create transmittals, facilitate payment of permit fees and response to plan check comments.
  • Direct others to work with various governmental agencies to facilitate prompt plan review and approval from reviewing agency.
  • At the direction of others, assist internal and/or external team members with interpretation of applicable codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Provides scope descriptions, fee, and time estimates for work product for use in proposal preparation. Prepares proposals on projects of limited scope and complexity.
  • Provides input to project team regarding project status on a regular basis, including scope of services, project schedule, and task budget items.

  • Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office, MS Project, and Adobe Acrobat.

Our 9-week internship program includes a Monday through Thursday schedule with curriculum and activities curated by practicing engineers.
